About this landmark
Sarakiniko Beach, on the island of Milos in Greece, captivates visitors with its extraordinary landscape of smooth, white volcanic rock formations contrasting against deep turquoise waters. This coastal destination is famed for its lunar-like terrain, where wind and waves have sculpted the soft volcanic stone into rounded cliffs, natural caves, and unusual shapes that give the appearance of an otherworldly seascape. Unlike typical sandy beaches, Sarakiniko features a predominantly rocky shoreline that invites visitors to walk, sunbathe, and swim in crystal-clear, calm waters. The unique geology is a result of the volcanic activity that formed Milos, and the beach offers magnificent photo opportunities at sunrise and sunset when the sun casts rich shadows on the white rock.
The name Sarakiniko itself is believed to come from “Saracens,” referring to pirates who once hid in the caves here. This historical connection adds a layer of intrigue to the natural beauty. Visitors can also enjoy quiet walks along the coast to admire the native Mediterranean flora growing in crevices and little natural pools formed by the retreating tides.
This beach is a standout spot in the Cyclades region, well-loved for its striking geological features rather than the typical palm-lined shores seen elsewhere. It offers a blend of serenity and breathtaking seascapes, making it a must-see for travelers seeking a distinctive coastal experience in Greece.
